Greed in "A&P"

In John Updike's A&P, the main character named Sammy was working with a family friend at an A&P. Suddenly, a group of rebellious girls enters the store and Sammy gains a sudden obsession over them. When the girls are confronted by the store manager and are told to leave, Sammy decides to commit a heroic act, by saying "I quit." Sammy's parents were friends with his boss, Lengel,  for a long time. Lengel even replies with "Sammy, you don't want to do this to your Mom and Dad" (Updike 23). After realizing that his attempt failed, Sammy says "...I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter" (Updike 23).
Sammy had a stable job working at the A&P, considering his boss was good friends with his parents. However, he was overtaken by greed. As a result, he was stripped of his job, and was left with losses rather than benefits.
